The text simulation is a staged scenario where the group is divided into three sets. Sets 1 and 2 take part in a real-time text exchange, projected onto a screen, and must stay within the brief they have been given. Once the conversation develops enough context, the activity pauses and Set 3 steps in.

Set 3 is asked to interpret the exchange by considering:

  1. What they believe is happening.

  2. Which “side” they would take, and why.

The key element is that Set 3 does not know the original brief. Their interpretation is based solely on what they see on the screen. This creates space for assumptions, mixed messages and differing perspectives, mirroring how misunderstandings often arise online. It highlights how easily digital conversations can go off track, especially when outside influences add their own opinions or interpretations.

This approach has been used with around 40 young people over the last five months, and the session continues to be a consistent favourite, sparking thoughtful discussion and engagement.
